Duties and Responsibilities
Organization Setting About UN-Habitat UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. Urban Lab of UN-Habitat supports countries in developing urban planning methods and systems that address current urbanization challenges. It promotes urban planning approaches to address urban expansion and transformation. Reporting and Communication The Urban Planner will be hired to collaborate closely with the Urban Lab team. He/she will be reporting to the Programme Management Officer and will be coordinating with the Geneva Technical Hub (GTH 2.0) Secretariat. Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the incumbent of the post will have to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities: - Prepare materials (presentations, maps, drawings) for workshops with city and county officials and technical staff. - Be responsible of the drafting, revision and completion planning materials (spatial analysis and drawings, reports). - Participate in technical missions, if required.
Qualifications/special skills
Minimum advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design is required, or related field that is relevant for sustainable urban development. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. At least 7 years of proven experience in drawing and preparing plan graphical material using computer assisted design tools, with special attention to data management and processing with GIS software is required. Good hand drawing / sketching of macro-scale plans is an advantage. Good analytic and design skills in regional and citywide planning and design is an advantage. Experience in regional and territorial scale planning will be considered an advantage. Working experience in the African continent is an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this advertised position fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
