Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Research and Data Specialist -Flagship Reports, the Statistics Specialist is responsible for conducting data analysis for UN Women’s flagship reports and other publications, providing substantive inputs, research and analysis for the production of UN Women’s flagship reports, providing substantive support to the Section’s statistical work and providing substantive inputs to communication and outreach activities. The incumbent will be primarily contributing to the research, statistical analysis and production of the
Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The gender snapshot
annual series and to forthcoming editions of Progress of the World’s Women,
but will also input into other data and statistics work that the R&D section is responsible for. The incumbent will also contribute to enhancement of UN Women’s data science and foresight capacity and contributing to the implementation of UN Women’s broader research and data agenda.
The Statistics Specialist supervises and leads several affiliate personnel such as consultants and interns.
Key Functions and Accountabilities:
1. Conduct data analysis for UN Women’s flagship reports and other publications:
Lead on the collection and assessment of relevant data sources for Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The gender snapshot annual series, Progress of the World’s Women and other flagship reports produced by the section
Conduct research and statistical analysis for all flagship reports produced by the section, including using statistical modeling and other quantitative techniques
Lead on the preparation of statistical materials for the flagship reports including annexes, technical notes, statistical references, definitions and so on
In close collaboration with colleagues, work on a data visualization plan for the reports with the aim that data are presented in ways that are accessible and attractive to non-technical audiences in all publications
2. Provide substantive inputs, research and analysis for the production of UN Women’s flagship reports:
Participate in brainstorming meetings and in-house discussions on various aspects of the reports’ production, including honing of the theme and structure of the reports, with particular reference to research and data
Carry out background cross-national and country specific research and write background notes and papers related to the reports’ themes;
Draft inputs, including those related to statistical analysis undertaken, for inclusion in chapters of the reports and co-author data chapters as needed;
Identify potential authors of background papers and other research materials for the analytical parts of the reports; take the lead on commissioning and coordinating their work where requested and comment on their draft papers;
Participate in providing comments on draft chapters and sections of the reports as required, including factchecking of all data elements in the reports.
3. Provide substantive support to the Section and Division’s other statistical work
Keep abreast of emerging development issues including in data science to galvanize UN Women’s analytical capacity to respond, particularly in the area of gender statistics;
Contribute to annual reporting and write briefing notes as requested.
Maintain and develop new partnerships with UN agencies and other data collecting organizations enhance the production and dissemination of sex-disaggregated data and gender statistics
Represent UN Women in inter-agency working groups and fora on research and data as requested.
4. Provide substantive inputs to communication and outreach activities:
Input into the design and preparation of data related materials for the launch of the flagship reports and ongoing advocacy efforts, including country fact sheets and other presentation materials, especially related to data and statistics;
Present statistics and data analyses at flagship report launches and other events;
Prepare background documents and other information to be used for media interviews and briefings, Member States, UN, UN Women country offices and other external requests as requested.
5. The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.
